Population from the 2011 Census. Price from HM Land Registry price paid data, year to April 2026, for Milton Ernest. Few homes sell in the village in any one year, so averages move sharply and should be read with care.
The village
Milton Ernest is recorded in the Domesday Book, and its name is thought to mean middle farm. All Saints' Church was built between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries. Milton Ernest Hall, a Victorian Gothic house designed by William Butterfield, served as a headquarters for the United States Eighth Air Force during the Second World War, and Glenn Miller was last seen in public at the Queen's Head in the village in December 1944.
Today the village is small and settled, with the river and open farmland around it, and Bedford, Sharnbrook and Rushden all within a short drive.
Homes and prices
Homes in Milton Ernest range from stone cottages and period houses to larger country homes on the edge of the village. Because so few sell each year, the village average moves sharply from one year to the next and says little about any single house. Detached homes sold for an average of around £546,000 over the year to April 2026, and the finest homes here, valued against the wider north Bedfordshire market, sell for several times that.
Getting about
The A6 runs past the village to Bedford in the south and Rushden and the A14 to the north. Bedford station, around five miles away, has trains to London St Pancras taking from around 40 minutes.
Schools
Families in Milton Ernest are close to the schools in Sharnbrook, including Sharnbrook Academy, and to Bedford's state and independent schools. We always suggest checking current admissions arrangements with Bedford Borough Council for a specific address.
