    The village

Oakley appears in the Domesday Book, and its parish church dates from around 1200. The village was bought by the 4th Duke of Bedford in 1737, and Oakley House served as a hunting lodge for successive dukes until the Bedford estate was sold in 1918. The village hall was built to mark Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, and the river and open countryside run along the edge of the village.

    Homes and prices

Oakley combines period estate cottages and houses with substantial detached homes built through the twentieth century, many on generous plots. Detached homes sold for an average of around £733,000 over the year to August 2026, among the highest of any village around Bedford, while the average across all homes was around £418,000. The gap between the two shows how much the type of home matters here.
