    The village

Turvey was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. The Mordaunt family held the manor from 1197 and became Barons of Turvey, and by 1792, when Turvey House was built, the estate had passed to the Higgins family. All Saints Church has Saxon origins and was enlarged in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, and Turvey Abbey, once a family house, is now a Benedictine monastery. The Three Fyshes, built in 1487, and the Three Cranes, beside the church, are both still trading. In the river by the old bridge, a statue of Jonah has stood on Mill Island since 1844.
