The village
Bromham was recorded as Bruneham in the Domesday Book of 1086, and the river has shaped it ever since. The medieval Bromham Bridge crosses the Great Ouse on its many arches, and Bromham Mill, a watermill mentioned in Domesday, was restored in 1980 and is open to the public. The parish church of St Owen stands at the edge of the park beside Bromham Hall.
Today Bromham is one of the larger villages around Bedford, with close to 5,000 residents, shops, a library, pubs and sports clubs, and open countryside along the river on its doorstep.
Homes and prices
Bromham offers more variety than most villages near Bedford: period houses near the church and the river, established detached homes on roads such as Village Road and Stagsden Road, and family homes built through the second half of the twentieth century.
Detached homes sold for an average of around £607,000 over the year to April 2026, and the average across all homes was around £514,000, up 7% on the year before and above its 2022 peak. Few villages near Bedford have held their value as well, and well presented detached homes here continue to draw strong interest.
Getting about
Bromham sits on the edge of the A428, with the A421 and the M1 at Junction 13 a short drive away. Bedford station is around three miles east, with trains to London St Pancras taking from around 40 minutes.
Schools
Bromham has its own primary schooling, and families are within easy reach of Bedford's state secondary schools and its independent schools, including Bedford School, Bedford Girls' School, Bedford Modern School and Pilgrims' School. We always suggest checking current admissions arrangements with Bedford Borough Council for a specific address.
